Lutheran Church of the Redeemer celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 1999. Organized originally as St. John's and later called Trinity Lutheran, it underwent two divisions and later reunifications. Christ Lutheran and Saviour Lutheran were congregations that came out of Trinity and existed just a few blocks away. Christ Lutheran later rejoined Trinity, and a consolidation of Trinity and Savior Lutheran Churches took place in 1967 under the name of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. (Abiding Presence Lutheran Church, a daughter church of Savior, was established as an "outreach to the suburbs" in 1961.)

As the "mother church" of Lutheranism in Trenton, Redeemer's building is historical. The Douglas House, where George Washington met with commanders to plan the second battle of Trenton, was used as a church parsonage for a time. The New Jersey Synod was inaugurated in our building in 1950. Books and records of the church are used from time to time by people interested in tracing their ancestry and for legal purposes, since births were not necessarily recorded in City Hall.
